The project aims to provide a temporary home to vulnerable children. The placement lasts until the children's reintegration with their biological or extended families. If this is not possible an alternative placement is identified. The main objective is to offer a temporary home to children who are to be reintegrated into their birth family or to be placed in a foster care family.

Volunteer's main tasks are to play with the children, using his /her creativity, assisting the children with their daily needs and responsibilities, read stories and songs in easy language, help to organize outings and to lead excursions with children groups, participate in painting and crafts workshops, participate in theatre and music groups.
The volunteer is encouraged to propose activities for and with the children according to his/her own background and ideas. A volunteer’s part in caring for the children would for the most part entail spending time with them, playing and eating with them, possibly teaching them some language in a playful way, sports, or art.
The volunteer will also not be responsible for the children’s health, appointments. There may be times when the volunteers are asked to stay with some of the children when staff persons on occasion have appointments or requirements to be met.
Sometimes the volunteers will be asked to work on weekends
and to have days off on working days, because there might be some events and activities on week-ends, like trips to other cities or some celebrations.
The main criterion are patience, attentative to small children and their needs, open-heartness, kindness and desire to work with children.
The centre provides a temporary family type facility for 20 children, who are assessed and placed here from institutions. The youngest age group is 3-12 years. One group is designed for children with disabilities. The categories of children - beneficiaries of the SGH- are very different and depend on complexity of their problems.
The SGH provides a family type environment where these children are helped to get ready for family life with either parents or foster cares. They are encouraged to participate in the day to day routine of the household, as well as in other activities. The Small Groups Home in Chisinau has been open since 1999 and represents the first alternative of this kind in the Republic of Moldova.
There are different types of accommodation:
- Your own bedroom in the project, with access to a shared bathroom and kitchen.
- A bedroom in the host family.
- A bedroom in a flat out side of the project where 2-6 volunteers live together.
Accomodation will depend on the availability of the places at the time of your application.
Volunteers receive food allowance.
What you need to bring with you:
- Bed clothes and towels.
- Warm clothes and good, waterproof shoes in case of winter.
- Some information about your country: pictures, maps, books, coins, recipes, etc.
- Small gifts from your country to give to people in your host project.
